Woodfire
What I find appealing about woodfiring is how it challenges me to think more long-term. Usually I spend the majority of my time crafting the work itself, however with woodfiring, sculpting clay becomes but one of the many tasks involved. There is a momentum throughout both the overarching process as well as within each task. From the making of pots to the collecting and splitting of wood, I find that I tend to work in a looser more rhythmic way. The patterns and motifs created by flame and ash which are unique to every firing are something I always look forward to seeing with the inevitable opening of the kiln. I want the methods I use to create work in preparation for firing with wood to be transient with respect to an instance of time and to reflect a feeling/mood in which they were created.
