Teapot
I studied ceramics for two years in the town of Tokoname located in Aichi, Japan. As a port town, goods have been imported/ exported both domestically and internationally since before the Edo period. During the Edo period, iron rich clay in Tokoname was found to possess properties similar to that of clay used to make imported Chinese clay teapots, and thus an effort to produce small Japanese ‘kyuusu’ began. Tokoname is well known today throughout Japan and internationally as a center for the production of high quality ‘kyuusu’ used for brewing Japanese, Chinese and Taiwanese teas. Through living here I have gained an appreciation for the exquisitely detailed craftsmanship of potters living and working here. Although I may not be so invested in the culture of tea personally, I find it endlessly rewarding to hone my skills and aesthetic sensibility creating something which must ultimately exists within the strict guidelines of function.
